He had a mild fever, showing little evidence of inflammation to the touch but accompanied by serious internal disorder, one of the symptoms being a desperate and compulsive urge to get relief by scratching himself. He suffered ulceration of his bowels, with acute intestinal pains, and an effusion of colourless fluid around the feet. He had a similar disorder of the abdomen, and what is more, a gangrene of the genitals that produced worms. He had difficulty in getting his breath when sitting upright, and his breathing was extremely unpleasant because of the offensive nature of the exhalation and his constant gasping. And in every limb he experienced convulsions that became unbearably violent.206
